rainy day boredom
the downside of a commute (besides the commuting part) is how to prepare for the journey. every morning i have to make a footwear decision. this can be hard. and it doesn’t have much to do with “what matches my outfit ” (see mom, i told you there was a benefit to me wearing all black all the time) it really has more to do with what i can walk in, and what’s falling or not falling from the sky.
top of the pile are my babies. my wonderful fluevog rodeo star boots. they are black and have pink details, including stars on them. they’re kinda like cowboy boots… only not really “cowboy”. they’re hawt and cost me more than i’ve ever spent on shoes in my life ($350). i wish i could find a picture, but apparently one does not exist on the internet anymore, because a description does not do them justice. they totally rule my life. hands down the most wonderful footwear i’ve ever purchased.
anyways, i finally took them to get resoled, as i had pretty much worn right through them over the past 4 years… but tragically a couple days before them went in, i somehow tore the back of one of them, leaving a big 2 inch long gash in the heel of the leather. yes, i cried a little. the guy that resoled them sewed up the back, but it’s starting to tear again, and now they’re not waterproof. my solution thus far has been to put a big old piece of duct tape on the inside of them to keep the water out and the leather together. but let me say, duct taping boots that have now cost me $500 (Was almost $150 for new soles and repairs) is fucking heartbreaking.
so the boots have been downgraded from daily rotation to once or twice a week. all the rain and snow has aided that, as my babies are no longer happy in the wet weather. sadness. i’m also having to consider the reality that i may not be able to wear them forever. they may “expire” sooner or later. but i am not prepared to deal with this reality yet.
next up there’s my polka dot rain boots. so sensible, cute and pretty comfy. not ideal for a LONG walk, but no real problems.

most days over the last month, these have been my footwear of choice. pros - feet are dry, as are the bottoms of my pants (because i subscribe to function over fashion and tuck my pants into my boots). cons - i have to carry another pair of shoes with me to wear around my office, as we have a stuffy dress code, and rubber boots just would not fly. another pro - rubber rain boots were $19 at target. pretty effing cheap. another con - rubber boots make your feet hot as hell, and an hour and a half commute is ample time for your feet to get sweaty.
other footwear options are my runners - not allowed with office dress code. ballet flats (i have about 20 different pairs) - not sensible for walking in even a remote chance of rain or wetness. various heels - not good for the 30 minute walk to the train station. ugly black boring work shoes - besides being ugly and boring, they also have a hole in the sole and leak.
so really, i’ve been rocking the rain boots daily. carrying the extra shoes in the purse is a bit of a pain, but i don’t really have many options. except maybe leaving shoes in my office. arg. commuting is hard. so much to consider.
