i get it.
awesome conversations had yesterday:
my guy – i really dig that new chevelle song. “you’re right, i get it… it all makes sense, you’re the perfect person… so right, so wrong, let’s all live in your imaginary life.” i’m all like, YA! you tell that bitch!”
me – i love you.

so this morning i did not go to the gym. my man’s best efforts to roll me out of bed did not work. i fail. instead of gyming, i did get up by 6am and make coffee and decide to go into work early.
i was scheduled to have a big meeting today, and i really needed to do some prep for it, so i figured taking the early train in was a good idea. unfortunately, i got into the office only to find out that my meeting has been pushed to monday. oh well. at least i get to go home early on this fine sunny day in exchange for my early start.
getting up earlier than normal is kinda nice. the world seems a bit different… the people that i see walking and in starbucks and on the train are not the same folks as my regular routine. of course, maybe it was the sun shining that made things seem a bit happier… but in any case, i kinda dug the early train.
this new outlook allowed me to play my new game: gay, asian or both?

seriously. gay men, asian men (particularly the japanese) and gay asian men have the most amazing sense of fashion.
gay men in vancouver have a pretty basic “look” going for them. most sport pretty tight shirts, often spandex or the like… will be wearing tight jeans, often womens jeans and usually some sort of flashy shoe. now, the asians love LOVE their wacky style, particularly japanese folks. they often are rocking the tight pants, almost always a flashy shoe and tight top, and also up the ante with crazy cool hair. the gay asians take it to a whole new level. it’s always a sight to behold. i used to be friends with a gay asian guy, and he put FAR more effort into his daily look than i ever had for a special occasion.
so this morning a 20-something asian guy gets on the bus and he’s standing right in front of my seat on the packed b-line to richmond, so i’m basically staring right at him for the next 10 minutes. he was dressed pretty typically for a trendy asian guy that age…. tight emo jeans with a weird checker insert thing on the leg wrapping around, a purple hoodie and sweet checkered jacket. oh, and silver sneakers. like silver foil. and a crazy hair-do. so as i’m staring at him, i was thinking, wow. if this guy was white, i would totally assume he’s gay based on this outfit. but he’s asian… so it makes me think he’s not gay, it’s just his wacky fashion sense… and then i thought maybe it’s both.
hence my new game. gay, asian or both.
please note, white people are not immune from unusual fashion. please. have you seen hippies? that’s a white fashion nightmare. but i’m totally not going there today. and to be honest, there’s nothing BAD at all about this, in fact i think quite the opposite. people with unusual fashion sense make me smile and entertain me. they don’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks, and i respect that.
and generally speaking, the gaybourhood and asian heavy areas are some of my favourite people watching. i guess it’s basically a culture thing… these are different cultures from the ones i exist in, and i find it fascinating to try and decipher the human nature at work through their fashion decisions. there’s so much of fashion that relates to primal instincts… the prevalence of cleavage for example. clearly used by women to invoke a basic male urge to reproduce… and i totally get that in gay culture, which is largely sex driven, tight clothes that show off the body and attract attention are the preferred style… but i am still trying to understand the asian penchant for loud clothing. perhaps it’s due to crowed cities in their ancestral countries that have evolved their fashion to be eye catching. i don’t know. but i do enjoy it from the spectator perspective.
of course this comes from the girl whose wardrobe is 95% black. so take it all with a grain of salt, lol.

my favourite thing about downtown is how anytime we’re on robson, the japanese and korean students all fall in love with my kid and stare at her and then she falls in love with them and stares at them – purely based on the werewolf hair and emo-seoul clothing.
